Sage Sundays
You may have seen me post videos on Instagram of me occasionally burning sage... Typically on a chill Sunday or when I feel like I need a fresh start after a stressful or hectic time. Here's the backstory: I got my smudge stick from a voodoo shop that I stumbled upon in New Orleans last year. (I think that's about legit as it gets.) It's a bundle of blue sage, which is usually burned for the purpose of healing and cleansing rituals. It's scent is very similar to lavender, but not quite as strong, which I like. Blue sage is often used for smudge sticks, but there are a variety of others that you can choose from that promote specific intentions.
The first time I burned sage was when I moved into my new apartment, to clear the space, but now I do it when the seasons change, after I've been sick, if I feel a change in my mood, after an argument or after a stressful week to help hit the reset button. When I'm beginning a "smudge session", I try to focus my intentions, whether it is clearing my personal space from negative energy or healing my body. I say these intentions out loud while lighting the sage, then waving it over myself and then walking around each room of my apartment. It is encouraged to walk around the perimeter of your space, paying special attention to doors and windows where negative energy can get in. I usually keep a window open while smudging, so that the smoke dissipates and the smell isn't as potent afterwards. It's a very peaceful ritual that I have come to appreciate in the last year and will continue to do for other benefits. Sage has antimicrobial properties that keep infectious bacteria and viruses away. It has also been believed to enhance tuition, improve your mood, sleep quality, memory and focus, as well as boost energy levels.
