My Weekly Hair Routine
At this point, my hair is so much healthier than it ever has been. I have a few reasons that this is the case. For starters, I started getting my hair cut regularly, which I hadn’t done since I was younger. About two years ago, I booked an appointment at Aveda in the Third Ward in Milwaukee and by some miracle got booked with Ruth, who has been cutting hair for years and took time to specialize in cutting curly hair. Believe me, the use of the word "miracle" is no exaggeration. I had no idea about how I should tell someone how to cut my hair, much about my curl type or what to focus my weekly routine on. I think I showed Ruth an Instagram picture of @briciaemilyn and told her that I wanted that shape to my hair. While she figured that out, she talked to me about my curl type and why I have a few different textures and curl patterns.
The curl spectrum is broken up into three categories: wavy, curly and kinky. These categories are then further broken down into a, b and c type curls. However, most people (like me) have multiple curl types in their head of hair. My curls generally fall into 3B but I definitely have other patterns that come from the whirl in the middle of my head. In addition to these different curl patterns, I also have a few different textures to my hair, but overall it is just really dry, which is pretty typical for multiracial girls. This conversation lead me to trying A LOT of different hair products (shampoo, conditioner, styling gel, hairspray). You name it and I've probably tried it. But all of this trial and error lead me to my normal weekly routine that has made my hair look and feel more healthy than its ever been.
During the Week
I start by shampooing (every other day) & conditioning and combing through my hair using a Wet Brush and then drying it using a microfiber towel to help with frizz. While my hair is still pretty damp, I put my styling products in, including: Miss Jessie's Multicultural Curls and Jelly Soft Curls, twisting my hair as I go to give myself more uniform curls and decrease frizz. Then I just add some hairspray- I've been using DevaCurl's Flexible Hold Hairspray. Yes, I know what I said but this hairspray smells like lavender and works really well. Going to try this Ouidad Finishing Mist soon, I'll let you know what I think.
Over the Weekend
I shampoo and condition my hair like normal and then deep condition using Shea Moisture's Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque, leaving it on for 10-30 minutes.
